PRP treatment for hair loss

Can PRP therapy reverse hair loss?

All of us experience panic when we see a handful of hair strands with every stroke of the hairbrush, and the feeling of sadness to witness balding patches one after the other. Baldness and hair loss are brutal on a person’s self-esteem and inhibit social interaction.

According to one study, 29% of women who undergo hair loss experience symptoms of depression while hair loss is considered to create a huge emotional burden for men. However, new therapies offer patients hope of hair regeneration without having to take pills or apply topical ointments.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a novel treatment procedure that uses one’s own blood platelets in order to topically deliver promising results for hair loss and regenerate lost hair.

What is PRP? How does it work?

PRP has emerged as a relatively new treatment for hair loss but has been used by doctors worldwide for skin rejuvenation, immune cell recruitment, coagulation and even to help in the heading process of surgical wounds.
It has acclaimed dermatological use as well and helps improve the appearance of facial tissue by promoting new cell growth.

Over recent years, this miraculous therapy is being used to restore as well as stimulate hair growth by using one’s own platelets.

In the 3 step process of PRP, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient’s body part such as the arm, and spun inside a centrifuge in order to separate the plasma and platelets from other blood components.

The platelets are unique owing to the fact that they secrete more than 300 substances including all kinds of growth factors such as transforming growth factor (TGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF).

These growth factors help to repair cells as well as stimulate growth and slow down both male and female pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia. Once the platelets and plasma are separated from your blood, the platelet-rich plasma is carefully injected into the scalp.

At Trichohom, we render efficient PRP treatment by ensuring that the platelet-rich plasma reaches the targeted scalp areas via the latest techniques like micro-needling. The side effects of PRP therapy are minimal and include some redness and swelling at the injection site post the procedure.

The entire procedure takes less than 30 minutes and you can very much return to your normal routine the very next day after undergoing the procedure. The normal timeline of the frequency with PRP therapy is once a month for three months for another session and then once every three to six months if required.

While the treatment has garnered popularity worldwide, the question is can PRP therapy reverse hair loss?

Studies show that PRP therapy combined with micro-needling is an effective treatment for patients dealing with androgenic alopecia. There have been several studies wherein subjects would be divided into two groups, one was given Rogaine; a hair loss medication approved by the FDA and is easily available over the counter. While the other was given Rogaine with PRP therapy rendered via micro-needling. The group of subjects that received PRP for hair loss showed significant regrowth of hair as well as an increase in thickness of hair.

PRP therapy greatly improves the appearance and thickness of your hair and while it does cause hair regeneration and reverses hair loss to a huge extent, it does not reverse hair loss completely. The best results of PRP are visible in patients who experience hair thinning or showed symptoms of male or female pattern baldness. For people experiencing these hair loss problems, PRP promotes the production of hormones regulating the growth of new hair and shows efficient results of hair thickening over time. However, it is not completely result-oriented for people who are fully bald.

However, the duration and extent to which PRP therapy lasts depend upon the individuals themselves. If proper care is not taken, your hair might be subject to hair loss issues time and again.

These are some tips for aftercare post PRP treatment:

  • Avoid rubbing, touching or pressing the treated areas of the scalp for at least 8 hours after the procedure
  • Avoid medications and supplements your doctor advises you to for at least a week prior to and 2 weeks post your treatment. Since PRP therapy requires the presence of inflammation and these medications inhibit the same, it is important to stop its usage till the doctor’s advice
  • Don’t panic if you experience redness, swelling, and bruising. It is completely normal and will last 2-5 days following the procedure.
  • If you experience severe pain or discomfort, connect with your doctor immediately
  • Refrain from applying ice to the injected areas as ice acts as an anti-inflammatory entity
  • Avoid wetting your hair for at least 3-4 hours after the treatment
  • For the first 3 days or more, use a pH-balanced shampoo to wash your hair
  • Avoid using hair products for at least 6 hours after your treatment
  • Avoid the vigorous sun, heat exposure and vigorous exercise for at least 2-3 days after the treatment
  • Stay away from steam rooms, swimming pools, and saunas for 2 days after your treatment
  • Avoid caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol for 3-5 days after the treatment as it delays the healing process

These are very basic and minimal requisites to be avoided after a PRP treatment and complying with the same will render results at the pace expected without any complications whatsoever.
