Can Covid-19 cause Hair Loss?
Since the start of 2020, Covid 19 has wreaked havoc on the whole world. Restrictions of movement, losing jobs, and being locked at home put many of us in a highly stressful situation.
Many Covid-19 patients have reported long terms symptoms such as splitting headache, prolonged loss of smell and taste, anxiety and mood disorder, muscle pain, low energy levels post-recovery. However, one symptom that went unnoticed was excessive hair loss following the infection.
According to the survey conducted by Cosmopolitan, Many people especially females reported hair loss as a long-term effect of Covid-19.
Can get infected with Covid 19 cause excessive hair loss?
Although Covid-19 is a respiratory disease, it can still stress other organs in your body. Viruses and bacteria trigger immune responses so that the body starts creating antibodies to fight the infection. During this process, the body undergoes a high level of emotional, psychological, and physical stress.
If there is one thing common in Covid-19 and Hair loss, it is ‘Stress’.
Stress is the leading cause behind hair fall. When your body is stressed out, such as in the case of Covid-19 infection, the level of Cortisol increases to an unhealthy level causing hormonal imbalance. This fastens the hair shedding cycle causing excessive hair-fall instead of normal one.

Did you know that there are not one but Four stages of Hair Growth?
These stages are as follows:
Anagen phase: Growing phase
In this stage, the hair follicles actively push out hair that will continue to grow for 3 to 5 years or sometimes longer than seven years. It is the longest phase. At a time, almost 90% of hair is in Anagen Phase.
Catagen phase: The Transition Phase
The Catagen phase starts after completion of Anagen phase. In this phase, the hair separates from the bottom of hair follicles, and the growth of hair stops. However, the hair stays on the scalps instead shedding. This phase lasts approximately ten days.

Telogen phase: The Resting phase
This phase lasts about three months. At a time, approximately 10-15% of hair is in the telogen phase. During this phase, new hair starts to form in follicles. However, the old hair does not shed.
Covid-19 induced stress trigger this process faster than the normal one.
Exogen phase: The Shedding phase
The Exogen phase is a part of Telogen phase. At this stage, you will lose hair from the scalp. Losing 50 to 100 hair strands per day are normal in the exogen phase. This phase lasts for about 2-5 months. New hair grows as the old one falls away.

Psychological Impacts of Excessive Hair loss
In current society, we judge people based on their looks. Hair enhances your overall beauty. Imagine not having hair on your eyelashes or eyebrows? Scary though right?. Having thick hair can naturally give you a personality boost to perform well in both personal and professional spheres.
However, excessive hair fall or receding hairline reduces confidence and increases imposter syndrome. It can also result in depression, anxiety disorder, and anti-social ness.
Most hair loss is temporary and may go away after 3 to 9 months. However, hair loss can get permanent and, you may lose a significant chunk of hair from your head.
Frustrated with Hair Loss?
While you may be getting frustrated with Hair-loss or sudden, do not try to treat it on your own using 5 minutes remedies found on the internet.
